An Excerpt from “The Ghost of Camp Hero” by Shelby Raebeck

NEW FICTION

Basketball basketball basketball. We sit in class all day thinking about it, then practice for two hours or maybe have a game, and drive home talking shit about who busted who, and I drop ’em both, Higgins and Sonny, in a fucking trailer park. And though my father’s life insurance got us a house—split level ranch in the center of Freetown—the place was too big for us to heat, half the rooms sealed closed with plastic. Every day same as the one before, until Coach comes up to me after practice and asks if everything’s okay and I say Sure, why wouldn’t it be? And he says, You’re not playing like yourself, keep it up and you won’t get a scholarship, and I shrug my shoulders, thinking, Fuck a scholarship, and take Higgins and Sonny home to the trailer park and go driving.

It’s another of those cold gray East End days when I pull up to the first beach, Maidstone, only half mile or so from home, and see this figure standing out at the end of the jetty that sticks into the harbor, wearing this purple hat and scarf. On days like that everything blurs into gray – water, land, sky—except now there’s these two soft spots of color. Then the figure holds its hands out to the side and turns slowly in a circle, and I realize it’s Joany. She spins again and I can barely make out her mouth is moving. I roll down my window but the wind is whipping in off the water too loud to hear anything, yet I see the headphones poking out beneath her hat and her mouth opening and closing like she’s singing. Hasn’t said a word to anybody in almost a year and she’s standing out there on the jetty singing.

I could hear the storm outside in the night. But a crack in the fire told me I Am Here, and I remained on the couch. Warm. Safe. Secure. At last with my privacy.

I was in that blissful state of living with my mind dead when the knocking began. It took me a bit to come back here. To debt, betrayal, and aging. I thought it was either a tree branch or dumb animal at first. Banging against the front from the wind or instinct.

The continued knocking corrected me. And it just grew louder, refusing to follow any rhythm to let me nod back to daydreams. It was a noise outside my peace. And I could only grumble in anger. Did not this would-be Voorhees know how much I suffered? Did he not know how much I needed this little away from it all? Here I was; finally enjoying the solitude I’d been planning for months, and in the peace of near slumber comes this KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK.

An Excerpt from “Give the People Guns” by Bela Seitz

The journalists had already hounded the hospital for that information, not that it mattered. The damage was done with or without him being alive; the video of him walking home – and of course he had a respectable job as a custodian of an elementary school, which the news outlets were loving so they could paint him as defenseless never mind the fact that he had been walking home from his mistress’ house four hours past curfew – and then disappearing under a mound. A mound of rats. The video, which was from a surveillance camera in front of a bank across the street, was black-and-white and grainy, so upon first watch it looks like a wave of sewage water encased the elderly man, rolling over him and leaving him stunned lying on the concrete sidewalk leaking blood. But, once you squinted, you could see their eyes. And their tails, which were light enough to register as a milky white on the camera. A pack of rats jumped on top of him with the precision of an assassin squad and, in seconds, took him out. It had taken a few days to find another video but, with a new angle, the world saw that, after the rats had finished with Mr. Reed, they dispersed back onto the streets; they had come together as a writhing mass of spiky grey fur for no clear reason other than to harm him and then they disappeared into subway tracks, pipes, ripped open garbage bags – any dark place where they could find food.
